Opinion Writing by Master Chief

A principal of a school feels that too much money is being spent on field trips. He wants to cancel all field trips for the rest of the year. Do you agree with his plan?

Write your answer in paragraph form using a topic sentence, at least two reasons with supporting details, and a closing sentence.

I don’t agree because without it all the kids won’t learn new things and see new things. They never get to see new things like dinosaur bones. What I’m trying to say is that field trips are a way to learn with out sitting in a chair.

I think the principal should not cancel field trips for many reasons. One of the reasons is field trips are fun and you can go to a lot of places like a tree farm. At the tree farm you get to see how they grow the trees.  I do not agree because people should be able to go on field trips.

Interview Project

The boys have continued to work on their ability to identify subtopics within a larger topic in order to form paragraphs. I decided to integrate some of the skills we work on in Social Thinking groups into our recent interview project. The boys had to work together to identify people they wanted to learn more about, figure out subtopics of information that they could formulate questions about, spend time writing questions for each subtopic and then interview their subject.

It took cognitive flexibility for many of the boys to be able to generate questions that might be of interest to the reader even if it was not of particular interest to them! They also had to practice asking a follow-up question based upon that information even if it had no relevance to their favorite topics. This really stretched those Social Thinking muscles! In addition, they had to use the communication skills we work on constantly - namely, turning your shoulders to face your conversation partner, attending to their words, asking question and making comments that are reciprocal all while having to make notes of the answers! Whew! This was a huge undertaking!

After interviewing their subject, they completed their drafts, self-edited their work and we wrote it in newspaper format. I hope you enjoy reading their pieces!  Remember....they write with pen names, so if you can't remember which one is your child just ask them!

Expository Writing in Paragraph Form

The boys have been working very hard to learn to write in paragraphs. They each chose an animal to research, take notes on, complete an organizing web, generate a multi paragraph report, and self-edit their report. They did a GREAT job! We will continue to work on this skill to expand the number of sentences per paragraph. This first time out of the gate was really to help them learn how to identify subtopics within a larger topic that should be broken out into paragraphs.

Check out these fantastic writing pieces below!
