The boys have continued to work on their ability to identify subtopics within a larger topic in order to form paragraphs. I decided to integrate some of the skills we work on in Social Thinking groups into our recent interview project. The boys had to work together to identify people they wanted to learn more about, figure out subtopics of information that they could formulate questions about, spend time writing questions for each subtopic and then interview their subject.
It took cognitive flexibility for many of the boys to be able to generate questions that might be of interest to the reader even if it was not of particular interest to them! They also had to practice asking a follow-up question based upon that information even if it had no relevance to their favorite topics. This really stretched those Social Thinking muscles! In addition, they had to use the communication skills we work on constantly - namely, turning your shoulders to face your conversation partner, attending to their words, asking question and making comments that are reciprocal all while having to make notes of the answers! Whew! This was a huge undertaking!
After interviewing their subject, they completed their drafts, self-edited their work and we wrote it in newspaper format. I hope you enjoy reading their pieces! Remember....they write with pen names, so if you can't remember which one is your child just ask them!
